ADHD Symptoms in Adults Can Be Unpredictable
Are you wondering if you have ADHD? It isn’t always easy to figure it out. ADHD symptoms in adults are not always predictable. Our lifestyles and personal preferences impact our symptoms, and our symptoms can change over time, as we do. So while there are some general characteristics that may indicate ADHD, they are not true for everyone. In other words, don’t expect to read a list, just check things off, and know for sure that you do or do not have ADHD.
Case in point: Hyperactivity — one of the most classic symptoms of ADHD.
What do you think of when you hear the term “hyperactive”? Most people think of the kid squirming in school, someone who is fidgety or restless, the person who has to be on the go all the time, the one who just can’t sit still. Well, this certainly is one of the most common ADHD symptoms in adults (and I’m a clear example of it), and yet at least 20% of adults diagnosed with ADHD actually CAN sit still! Go figure!
Did you know that sometimes hyperactivity actually manifests internally?
What does that mean? Do you know anyone who stares off into space? Have you ever been accused of being a daydreamer? Do you get lost in your own head? That can be a form of hyperactivity, too! Your body might be still while your mind is busy jumping all over the place!
The point is, it really isn’t that important whether or not what you are experiencing matches anyone’s official list of ADHD symptoms in adults. What IS important is how you are functioning in the world and how you feel about the symptoms you DO have. If you find you are having a challenge staying focused and achieving your goals, then you may have ADHD. Whether you do or not, there are simple tools you can learn to use that will help you conquer your symptoms so you can have total success in your life.
