Positive ADHD Symptoms in Adults
Most people assume that having ADHD is all bad news. Well, you know what they say about those who assume, don’t you? The truth is, not all ADHD symptoms in adults are bad. In fact, as an adult with ADHD, I can attest that many of the symptoms are actually positive! Let’s take a look at some characteristics commonly associated with ADHD, in a not so positive way, and then flip them around!
What is the best known symptom of ADHD? Did you say hyperactivity? When we think of someone who is “hyper” we often think of someone who can’t sit still, who is always squirming around, right? Well, that person is also very high energy and is often capable of getting more things done in a day than some people can squeeze into a week! People with ADHD want to be doing something constantly and often are on the go, go, go until they just can’t go any more.
Being easily distracted is another common symptom of having ADHD, and this can get in the way of our success. But why are we so easily distracted? Because distractions are a form of stimulation, which we as adults with ADHD need to have in our lives. People who are easily distracted can make great entrepreneurs, work well with flexible schedules in unpredictable environments and may actually excel at working from home, where they can control the stimulation.
Finding it challenging to control reactions to surroundings is another common ADHD symptom in adults. Officially called “impulsivity” this can indicate a sharp wit and may exhibit itself verbally, which might not be a positive trait, if you are a diplomat, but there are many careers where expressing yourself is not only accepted, it is encouraged. Actors, painters, and athletes all use their emotions and can serve as examples of using impulsivity in our personal and business lives in a good way.
These are just some of the ways we can positively look at ADHD symptoms in adults. It isn’t always easy to do, and sometimes we need a little help to get enough control to turn what could be a negative into a positive. Fortunately that is possible. I know, because that’s what I’ve done, and I have been able to help thousands of other adults with ADHD also turn their symptoms and their lives around!
